Bus accident in Louisiana causes property damage but no serious injuries

Baton Rouge, LA – A bus collision can be dangerous due to the potential for multiple passengers to be injured at once. This is also a large vehicle, meaning the impact from a collision can be destructive. People riding on a bus can potentially sustain life changing injuries if they become disabled or develop other long term health issues from their injuries. The only way to pay for this medical treatment may be to bring a civil case for compensation. An attorney can provide more specific information about suing the company that operates a bus or other commercial vehicle.

KTBS 3 reported on an accident involving a bus and a truck in Louisiana [1].

Bus gets pushed into pole at intersection

Police responded to an area that was north of downtown Shreveport where they found that a light pole had been knocked down. Witnesses reported that a pickup truck went straight through a red light at the intersection of North Market Street and North Common. At this time, a SporTran bus was going southbound through the same intersection. When the truck collided with the bus, the impact forced the bus into the pole, causing it to come down.

The report stated that there were no significant injuries from the incident. There were also no passengers riding the bus at the time of the crash.

Who is legally responsible for a bus accident?

In most cases, if there is a lawsuit filed after an accident involving a bus, the individual driver will not be responsible. This is because an employer is generally responsible for the actions of their commercial drivers, and this is also true if the bus is owned by the government and used for public transportation. The victim can name the defendant company or government in their complaint that begins a civil lawsuit, and say that they are responsible for any injuries that resulted from the driver’s negligent behavior. While there are some special rules for suing the government, companies and government entities are generally held to the same standards as any other individual or business when it comes to proving negligence. The plaintiff needs to show a deviation from the accepted standard of care for the situation.
